As you might know, I’m a self-described color geek, and one of my favorite things about teaching painting is helping others to demystify the wide and wonderful world of color.
In my classes, I often talk about “getting friendly with colors,” which simply means putting on your mad scientist hat and having fun!
As you explore, get curious about how colors from the tube can mix to create more nuanced colors. Explore how colors “play” with other colors (aka how they look next to each other). Notice if you’re colors are translucent or opaque (see-through or solid). Identify your dark values and light values.
When you let go of doing color “wrong,” a playful world of possibility and exploration awaits.
In the video below, I’m happy to answer this fantastic question that came in, “If you were stranded on a desert island, what five colors would you bring?”
So good, right?
Find out why I love these colors below, and if you’re curious to try some of my favorites, here are some handy links: titanium white, carbon black, turquoise, quinacridone nickel azo gold, quinacridone magenta, fluorescent red, and iridescent gold fine paints.
Please note, I am not sponsored by Golden Paint in any way… but I probably should be, haha!
Also, if you’ve missed some of the past episodes of Hey Flora, you can find many of them compiled right here.
Have your own burning question? Feel free to send it over to: [email protected]. I’ll do my best to answer it in an upcoming episode.
I hope you find these little videos helpful!
